1 A fruit fly can has four stages in its life cycle, namely the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stage. At 21 degrees Celsius, typical classroom temperature, the fruit fly can produce new adults in two weeks; eight days in the larval and egg stages, and six days in the pupal stages. The fruit fly may live up to several weeks.

2 The fruit flies are fertile for life after reaching their maturity. A fruit fly can store sperm after a single insemination and this can be used for many reproductions to come. And for fruit flies, the females can start to lay eggs just around 48 hours after the fruit fly emerges from the puparium.

3 The fruit fly doesn’t carry pathogens that are harmful to human beings, but they can be carriers of diseases such as cholera, typhoid fever, trachoma, anthrax and dysentery. The fruit fly can leave behind bacteria and this can lead to diarrhea and other health issues.

4 One of the best ways to prevent fruit fly infestation is to clean your home and make sure it is sanitized. Fruit flies are attracted to overripe fruits and vegetables and you must make sure that these are stored off properly and out of reach for these fruit flies.

5 The simplest trap to make to catch fruit flies is by pouring balsamic or apple cider vinegar and dishwashing detergent mixture in a glass. The fruit fly is attracted to the scent of the vinegar and the dishwashing detergent lessens the surface tension of the mixture. Upon landing, the fruit flies sinks and eventually drowns in the mixture.
